I am more of spicy food person. Whenever my mum does kolukattai she will do special few pieces of kara kolukattai for me. I do this version sometime when we make idiyappam as I use idiyappam flour for making kolukattai. This is a less calorie version.
Steps to make Kara kolukattai:
- Heat pan add water. Allow it to boil, now add 1/2 tbsp salt, 2 tbsp oil and rice flour and mix well until water reduced.
- Now knead it into chapathi dough and make into small balls.
- Now steam the ball in idly cooker for 5min.(Until it cook well)-steam cooking
- Now heat pan add 2 tbsp oil, mustard seed, urad dal, chana dal, chopped green chilli, pinch salt, curry leaves and add that balls and stir for few seconds.
- Finally add grated coconut and turn off the flame.

I do this version sometime when we make idiyappam as I use idiyappam flour for making kolukattai. This is a less calorie version. Heat oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add urad dal and bengal gram dal, when dal turns golden brown, add red chillies, hing and curry leaves. Then add grated coconut and saute for a few minutes. Kozhukattai (or Modak or Kozhukatta) is a rice dumpling made during Ganesh Chaturthi along with sundal.
