The ingredients needed to make Ven Pongal/ Kara Pongal:
- Get 2 cups raw rice
- Prepare 1 cup moong dhal
- Make ready 8 cups water
- Prepare 1 1/2 cup milk
- Take For Tempering–
- Get 2 tsp cumin / jerram seeds
- Take 2 tsp crushed pepper
- Prepare 3 sprigs curry leaves
- Get 3 tbspn cashews
- Make ready 2 tbspn ginger (chopped)
- Make ready 1/2 cup ghee
Steps to make Ven Pongal/ Kara Pongal:
- Wash moong dhal 3 times.In a pressure cooker, add 3 tspn ghee and roast moong dhal till raw smell disappears. Add the washed rice and water.
- Add salt and turmeric powder. Cook for 4- 5 whistles. Cool completely and open.
- Add milk and mix well. Check salt. For tempering heat the remaining ghee add pepper and cumin seeds.
- After it cracks add ginger and cashews. Roast till cashews are golden. Finally add curry leaves and turn off the stove.
- Add tempering to pongal and mix well. Serve hot with sambar and coconut chutney.
